Meet Badass Art Gallery’s resident art maestro and chief encourager Pol Mesina Jr. If there’s an artist lurking inside you yearning to break free, then Pol is your person.

With his arsenal of paints, brushes, and painting tips and techniques, he’s here to convince you (yep, that’s you, Little Artist) that everyone can paint—or at least have a fantastic time trying! As the main man at Badass Art Gallery’s “Art Journeys” drawing and painting workshops, Pol will guide you on your personal trip to uncover the artist within.

Want to know more about your guide? Here’s a glimpse into Maestro Pol Mesina, art professional who not only loves to paint but has also found his calling as an art teacher and long-standing leader of the dynamic ARTipolo Group.

His Inspiration

“I learned to teach art from Master Fernando Sena, the father of Philippine art workshops. As a student in many of Mr. Sena's workshops, I saw how very fulfilling it was to teach art, and that inspired me to become a professional art teacher conducting my own workshops. I will never stop teaching; it’s something I will continue to enjoy as much as painting.”

His Defining Moment

“When Mr. Sena made me his teaching assistant, I realized that I had potential as an art teacher. With time and practice, I discovered and improved on my teaching skills. I was greatly moved by the enjoyment and fulfilment shown by participants, especially those who had no economic means to pursue formal studies in fine arts.”

His Motivation

“When I started conducting art workshops, my students were residents of an orphanage, kids with disabilities, children who had been abused. I’d like to believe that I was able to bring a little hope and something positive into their lives.

“Medical studies have found that the experience of creating art is an effective therapy for persons with disabilities, like those with autism. A few years ago, parent-members of the Autism Society of the Philippines asked me to hold art workshops for their children. Knowing that I could help improve their condition through teaching gives me great fulfilment.

“I want to share everything that I have learned from Fernando Sena. Art workshops not only bring joy to participants but also help them develop discipline. I hope I am also helping to develop local artistic talent, especially those who are disabled and less fortunate.”

“The parents of my students have said that their children often applied what they learned from my art workshops in their schoolwork, especially the discipline and determination to finish their work. One of the parents related how thankful she was that her child became significantly less high-strung, channeling all their nervous energy into drawing and painting.

“Many parents were happy that some of their children’s artworks were sold in the exhibits held to showcase the results of these art workshops.”

His Results
His Experiences

Some of what Pol considers the most gratifying results from his workshops:

  • the gold medal earned by a student from an art competition in Japan;

  • the championship won by a group of disabled high-school students in an on-the-spot painting contest, which awarded them a group trophy, individual medals, and high praise from their principal; and

  • a workshop student who passed the talent exam required for admission into the UP College of Fine Arts.
